Safely feed your child on the go

When it comes to our babies and children, safety is paramount, and there is plenty you can do as a parent to make sure your child is safe when it comes to food and eating.

That’s why, when designing the Subo food bottle, we made sure it answered two of the biggest concerns parents have about feeding and children.

Concern 1: No harmful chemicals
We’ve all heard about plastics leaching into food and there’s been a big switch to using food containers that don’t contain problematic chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates.

These chemicals are synthetic and can leach from containers or wrappings into the food they’re holding, especially when they’re heated. The biggest concern about these chemicals is they can mess with your child's hormones.

Phthalates are found in many plastics as it acts as a softener. This chemical is an endrocine disruptor that has been linked to asthma, allergic reactions, fertility and reproductive malformations in baby boys.

BPA can be found in plastic containers such as sippy cups, canned food liners and so on. This chemical is thought to mimic the hormone estrogen in the body, creating problems for reproduction, growth, cell repair and energy levels.

We can’t easily measure how much use of these chemicals impacts our children’s health, so leading health experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend parents reconsider the type of plastic packaging their child’s food is in.

Reusable food and bottles should be BPA and phthalate free, like the range of Subo food bottles. We manufacture the food bottle in Australia and are part of the Australian Made campaign, so we can ensure the highest quality materials are used. These materials are stringently tested and known to be BPA and phthalates free.

Concern 2: Reduce choking risk
And it’s just as important what goes into the container. When babies begin to transition to solid foods, the risk of choking is a big concern for parents. Over 150,000 Australian children visit emergency departments each year, with the most common emergency being choking.

Children under the age of five, are at the highest risk of choking because they’re still mastering the art of chewing and swallowing. Plus they’re more likely to put things in their mouths that are small enough to get lodged in their airway.

This doesn't meant you have to stick to pureed foods to keep your child safe. Consider Subo as the perfect way to give your child chunkier foods, especially when you're out and about.

The food bottle only allows food that is soft and small enough to pass through the spout. This ensures your child isn’t getting pieces of food that are too big to manage.

This includes foods such as:
  • Pureed or mashed fruits and vegetables
  • Yoghurt
  • Smoothies
  • Porridge
  • Weetbix and baby cereals
  • Tinned spaghetti or baked beans
  • Soups
Subo has been designed so parents can ensure their baby or child is getting the most nutritious and appropriate food for their age and development. It allows your child independence to feed themselves while under your supervision.

The following two tips mean you can safely give your baby or child a snack or convenient meal in the Subo food bottle without worrying about choking:

a. Sit while eating: children are more likely to choke if they eat when lying down or running around. Young babies should be able to sit up independently and have good neck and head control.

b. Keep pieces of food small: food that is too big won’t work in the Subo food bottle. Mashed and soft foods that are the size of the tip of your little finger work best. Anything bigger than this size is difficult for small babies and children to eat safely.

Feeding your child safely and conveniently doesn't have to be a problem or scary.
